Big Red Sponge for ONR?

Recommended Posts

Anyone use the big red sponge for rindless washing? I don't know the history, but Optimum may have recently taken over distribution from SoCal detail supply? Or Yvans?

Curious as to this vs one or more mf towels? I've read concerns of mf towels collecting dirt/debris which can be hard to remove.

The Big Red Sponge (or BRS) as it called around here, was discovered by Dann Williams who is now a Regional Manager with OPT, so we took it in-house. It was used by Yvan LaCroix for a series of videos and I have a prototype (blue) that I've used for several washes. It's big, so hard drop, it's cut to allow dirt to be sucked into it's crevices, it holds mucho water, and gets into nooks & crannies well. Following Yvan's advice, I keep it in a bucket of ONR so it doesn't get dry and find it handy for quick spot washes (windows, bugs, etc)

Thanks for the feedback...preparing a significant opti order as I move away from tunnel washes to doing my own care. Maybe I'll get one of the BRSs as well as a MF covered sponge. I think Setec is indicating a non-loop variety so that dirt/debris is not so easily "lodged" into the material.

Thanks,
Rick

Based on Dr. G's comments years ago, I had been using a microfiber towel for my rinseless washes. I've tried a few sponges, including grout sponges and ones I've cut grids in, but nothing has pleased me as much as the Meguiar's microfiber mitt I'm now using. According to the Meguiar's, the mitt is made of a microfiber composition that sheds dirt easily with a good shake in the solution. It's not perfect, but it IMO it's the best alternative I've tried. As a bonus, they're quite reasonable around 6 bucks each, cheap enough that you can afford to have more than one.

I designed the BRS specifically for ONR. It uses ONR's dirt relesing and watre softening abilities to it's advantage by dropping the dirt off the sponge as soon as it touches the ONR surface.

By pure, do you mean distilled water? Some obvious responses - distilled water has no minerals so will not water spot, but it costs more. One of ONR's benefits is that it softens hard water, so distilled should not be necessary. I can tell you some pros swear by distilled water and others don't feel it's needed.

Im not a pro, but I am plenty fanatical about my vehicles. My truck was new a year ago and only the big red sponge touches the paint to wash it. Hardly any marring at all, and what there is was probably from drying.

The BRS is by far the best wash media I have ever used.

Not only that but it is super durable. I dont do anything special to it, actually it gets abuse, and it is exactly the same as the day I bought it a year or so ago.
