How Strong is Optimum Paint Prep?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I consider applying optimum paint prep every time I wax my cars.

Can you please advise me how strong the optimum paint prep is and whether it is safe to use without thinning or removing any clear coat?

Many thanks.

Paint prep is a mild solvent. You should be able to use it as many times as you want without harming you or your car. It will not thin or remove clear coat because it is non abrasive. Opti Seal and car wax are also non abrasive.

Oldfordisbetter is exactly right, consider Paint Prep a decontaminant that removes wax, sealant, etc. It also can be safely used on your interior. Just spray and wipe until the surface feels squeaky clean, making sure to remove all Prep residue.

I know you are concerned about abrasives but I would always choose poli-seal over paint prep to prep the paint for sealing or waxing.

Poli-seal does have slight abrasives but it will not abrade your paint to the point that it will strip all your paint off. It is only a mild cleanser and protector that will enhance your paints finish before waxing.

Thank you for your advices. Im concerned of using paint cleaners or hand polishes with very light abressives.

Sometimes I also see products called non-abressive polishes. Does it mean that they are all paint cleaners to clean off the surface like optimum paint prep?

If so, is an optimum paint prep is a category of non-abressive hand polishes?

If not, how different is paint prep to non-abressive hand polishes?

Thank you for your responses Chris. What would you recommend to clean the paint without removing any factory clear coating on the car? Or at least is that possible?

I used optimum car wash > ferrex > paint cleaner > wax on my both cars. Then my cars got so shinny and I can see every metallics in the paint.

Im just wondering whether I only need to wipe down with paint-prep or i also need to use any paint cleaner before waxing a car from now on.

Helpful breakdown of the variety of "stuff" that ends up on painted surfaces and best product to clean it, Chris. When posters pose questions on a forum, they may be clear on what they're asking but answering gets complicated by all the variables. It's easy to give quick answers based on WHAT WE THINK you mean, but that can lead to misunderstandings and potential disaster. See the questions raised by UV protection in various products - people looking for simple answers where there aren't any.
